What off the rack dresses are in Dressmaker, how to make and sell one, what they pay, why reviewers call the loop thin, and the reported commission bug to watch for.

You can make dresses in Dressmaker without a customer asking for one. The official store page describes it as displaying your own designs in the shop window and selling pre-made dresses off of the rack. Selling them earns coin and reputation, and the developers count this separately from the story, describing roughly 35 hours of story commissions excluding off-rack dresses.

It is not a free play mode. There is no separate sandbox entry, no difficulty setting, and no way to switch the commissions off. You are still playing the same save file, and the off-rack counter sits beside the commission board rather than instead of it.

Making and selling one dress

The work uses the same stations as a commission, minus the measurement step, because nobody is being fitted.

  1. Open the sketchbook and design the dress you want. No brief, no tags to satisfy.
  2. Buy fabric and trims at the Emporium. This is the only place the plan can go wrong, because the dress has to sell for more than the materials cost.
  3. Lay out and cut the pattern, following the grain line if you want the quality.
  4. Assemble and sew the dress on the mannequin.
  5. Add accessories, then finish the dress.
  6. Sell it. On the completion screen the options are to continue working, sell the dress or gift it, and the sell option shows the coin amount before you commit.

A recorded session showed a completed dress offered a sale price in the low hundreds of gold. In the same session a single two-metre silk panel cost about 60 gold. That is one observation, not a spreadsheet, but it is the right way to think about the decision. Check the offer against what the materials cost you.

What the loop feels like once the dress is sold

A reviewer who played the full build described the selling moment as bare. Her words were that once you hit sell you simply receive the coin and that is it, with no customer appearing to react.

She also reported that she was never short of gold during her playthrough, so she only made three or four off-rack dresses in total. That is one person’s sample, and she reviewed the game favourably overall at 7.5 out of 10. It does mean the “make dresses to fund the story” plan is not obviously necessary.

When off-rack work is the better choice

There is no published formula, so here is the reasoning that follows from what is confirmed.

  • You want to design, not satisfy a brief. This is the strongest reason. Off-rack work is the only place your own taste is the whole brief.
  • You have a commission drought. If nobody new has walked in, an off-rack dress keeps your skills sharp and tops up gold.
  • You need a specific purchase. If an unlock needs a costly fabric, selling one dress can close the gap.
  • You want to test a silhouette. The sketchbook is free, but seeing a finished garment costs materials. Do that test on an off-rack dress rather than a paid commission.
  • The opposite case: if your goal is story, reputation or unlocks, commissions do all three and off-rack work only does the gold part.

The reported bug worth knowing about

A Steam discussion thread is titled “Comissions Vanish if you Make Off the Rack”. The poster reports that commissions disappear after making an off-rack dress. There is no confirmed reproduction and no official response at the time of writing.

Until that changes, one habit is worth keeping. Save before starting an off-rack dress on a file with open commissions. If you are deep into a character’s arc, keep a manual backup as well. If it happens to you, the developers ask for bug reports with the save file attached. The official links page lists where to send it.

What players ask for instead

The community’s stated wish is a real free play mode: dresses only, no commissions, no story pressure. In a Reddit thread about whether the game is replayable, one player predicted the developers would add exactly that, and another argued the creativity already is the replay value.

Neither is a promise. The developers’ published post-launch list covers bug-fix updates with new fabrics and accessories, an online challenge mode, transparent fabrics, proper controller support, and mobile and Switch ports. A separate free play mode is not on it.

The honest reason to do it

Treat off-rack dresses as the part of the game where you play for yourself. The coin is real, the reputation is real, and neither is generous enough to be a plan. If you want to know whether the dressmaking loop is fun before spending anything, the free prototype tests that without any gold at all.
